Break-Even Calculator: your daily floor

Before you sign a lease, hire help, or buy a van, you need one number: how many dogs a day you have to groom just to cover your costs. This calculator gives you that line in the sand.

Why break-even is the first number

Break-even is the point where revenue covers costs and you start actually making money. Knowing it turns vague anxiety ('can I afford this?') into a concrete daily target you can plan around.

Knowing your break-even helps you:

  • Decide whether a new lease or loan is realistic
  • Set a minimum daily booking goal
  • Know how many no-shows you can absorb
  • Price with confidence, because you know your floor volume
Break-even isn't your goal — it's your floor. Everything above it is profit. Everything below it is debt.

How to use this calculator

Enter your monthly fixed costs, your average ticket, your variable cost per groom, and how many days you work. We'll show how many dogs per day you need to break even.

What to do with your break-even

If the daily number feels impossible: your fixed costs are too high for your pricing. Either raise your average ticket or rethink the expense before you commit.

If you're comfortably above it: you have room to invest — in help, equipment, or marketing — without risking the business.

Re-run it after any big change: a rent increase, a new hire, or a price change all move your break-even line.

Common questions

Costs that don't change with how many dogs you groom — rent, insurance, loan payments, software, base utilities. Variable costs like product and supplies go in the per-groom field.
If you want a break-even that includes paying yourself a set salary, add it to fixed costs. Otherwise this shows the point where the business covers its costs before your pay.
It's risky. If break-even eats most of your bookable days, you have little cushion for slow weeks or cancellations. Raising prices is usually the fastest fix.
The pricing calculator tells you what to charge per groom. This one tells you how many grooms you need at that price to cover costs. Use them together.
